Adirondack Chairs

All About Adirondack Chairs and Furniture

Several years ago my dad started making Adirondack chairs and I just didn't understand it. Who would want to sit in, let alone buy an uncomfortable wooden chair? It just didn't make sense to me until I sat down. Adirondack Chairs are just so comfortable....they seem to just mold to your body and fit perfectly. The large arms and slanting back and raised spot for the knees seem to instantly relax me. If you add a foot stool and a side table with a glass of iced tea and a book or magazine and I'm not going anywhere for the afternoon.

I know this page doesn't have anything to do with wooden pens but I am a woodworker and this is just another facet of my woodworking hobby. I like making just about anything out of wood. I love working with power tools and my hands.

I decided that I wanted a couple for myself but tend to be thrifty and a woodworker....I'm not buying anything made of wood that I can build myself. This way I could save money and have the satisfaction of building something with my own hands. Alot of people don't understand this but the feeling of accomplishment when you sit in your chair that you made yourself is pretty nice.

I set out on a mission to buy some Adirondack Chair Plans and make my own. I could have used my dad's plans but we tend to be a little competitive and I wanted to be a little different. My dad builds the flat back style chairs and I like the fan back style a little better because they wrap around you in a semi-circle and I feel they are more comfortable.

Here's Another page where you can see some of my chairs.

I really liked building these chairs and it was a good thing because just a little after the first set was done I had requests for more and more and more! I started making them for friends and family members and even started selling some online in my local area.

I made alot of mistakes and learned a whole lot on the first few chairs but eventually I got pretty quick at turning out the chairs. Then I started adding in the accessories like foot stools and side tables. These were also made in the traditional Adirondack style so they matched everything perfectly. These also were fairly simple to make but had a learning curve and required a process to make them right and fairly quick.

Once I became comfortable with making these chairs and accessories I started looking around a found alot of fun styles that could be incorporated in to this line. There were Adirondack Chairs in styles such as a Fish, Moose, Bear and even a beer/soda bottle. Talk about personalized and fun !
